Virtual Author Interview: Our Lady of Birth Control Sabrina Jones in conversation with Paula Hewitt Amram

October 24, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm EDT

Join celebrated graphic novelist and illustrator Sabrina Jones as she speaks with World War 3 artist and writer, Paula Hewitt, about using art—and the comics medium—to give voice to social justice and other topical issues.

Sabrina Jones is a cartoonist, comic book artist, writer, editor, and scenic artist, who began her career with activist art collective Carnival Knowledge and alternative comics World War 3 Illustrated and Girltalk. Her books Race to Incarcerate: A Graphic Retelling (with Marc Mauer) and Isadora Duncan: A Graphic Biography were both named “Great Graphic Novels” by the Young Adult Library Services Association.

Jones is also the author and illustrator of The Read Cost of Prisons, FDR, and the New Deal for Beginners, Yiddishkeit, Radical Jesus, and most recently, Our Lady of Birth Control: A Cartoonists’ Encounter with Margaret Sanger. She received a BFA in painting from Pratt Institute and an MFA in illustration from the School of Visual Arts.

She supplements her alternative cartoonist lifestyle with work as a scenic artist in the entertainment industry, painting scenery for Saturday Night Live since 1994 when she joined United Scenic Artists Local 829. She maintains a revolving co-habitation with novelist Steve Stern, between his house in upstate New York and her apartment in the heart of Brooklyn.

Paula Hewitt Amram is a painter, illustrator, and builder of green playgrounds. She lectures at School of Visual Arts, The Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Book Festival, Cooper Union, Department of Sanitation, DEP facilities, skate parks + gardens.
